The Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (東京都交通局, Tōkyō-to Kōtsū-kyoku), also known as Toei (都営), is a bureau of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government which operates public transport services in Tokyo. Among its services, the Toei Subway is one of two rapid transit systems which make up the Tokyo subway system, the other being Tokyo Metro.

Tokyo City purchased the Tokyo Railway Company, a streetcar operator, in 1911, and placed its lines under the authority of the Tokyo Municipal Electric Bureau (東京市電気局, Tokyo-shi Denki Kyoku). The TMEB began bus service in 1924 as an emergency measure after the Great Kantō earthquake knocked out streetcar service in the city. (The TMEB was also responsible for providing electric power to Tokyo, but this service was privatized in 1942 as Tokyo Electric).

In 1942, the Japanese government forced a number of private transit businesses in Tokyo to merge into the TMEB. These included the bus lines of the Tokyo Underground Railway (whose Ginza Line remained independent), the Keio Electric Railway and the Tokyu Corporation, as well as the Oji Electric Tramway (operator of the Arakawa Line) and several smaller bus companies.

In 1943, Tokyo City was abolished and the TMEB's operations were transferred to the new TMBT.

TIMELINE STORIES

The official Toei Kotsu Application provides a subway route planner as well as information on Toei's bus and Toden (tram) services.

The Tokyo Metro is the largest in the world in terms of the number of passengers carried, with 10 million people using its services every day. The Tokyo Metro consists of the lines of the two independent companies Tokyo Metro and Toei. The two networks are completely separate. To transfer from the line of one operator to the line of another, you need to buy a second ticket or a special ticket with the possibility of transfer. Only passengers with PASMO electronic transport cards, a Common One-day Ticket and a single Tokyo Combination Ticket can safely travel on all lines.

This video was recorded on 2019/8/9 - 8/18. Updated my website to version 0.12.0, added 329 new photos of various Japan railway trains! https://sfrails.info/en Welcome to Tokyo! I was travelling to Tokyo on 8/9-18. I took my camera out on almost all journey in Japan, enjoy the videos! This is a mega compilation of the 9 lines of the Tokyo Metro system. Most of the footages are from previous uploads, with plenty of unused footages thrown in. Unfortunately, I am not able to record any Toei trains on the Asakusa Line (5300 series and 5500 series), even though I have the luck to meet the same train on 3 separate days. I also am not able to record the Nippori-Toneri Liner. #ToeiSubway #都営地下鉄
